Community is necessary for any healthy lifestyle. Whether we have close friends, family members or neighbors, finding fulfillment is easier when surrounded by loved ones. We may suffer psychological effects if we fail to maintain emotional and intellectual bonds with others. This is especially important with seniors. A lack of socialization can lead to a decline in emotional and cognitive stability, participating in activities, having conversations with friends and joining interest groups are all great ways to maintain a social life in later years. As shared in the following article: A surprising key to healthy aging: Strong social connections, socialization is the best defense against a multitude of health risks.

Longview’s recreation programs provide opportunities for our residents to participate in daily exercise classes including yoga, tai chi, and aqua aerobics. If you are looking for something outdoors you can take a stroll on our nature trail or join the weekly walking club or just hang out in the greenhouse visiting with the plants. For those looking to stretch their artistic mind we offer pottery, quilting, knitting, and painting class. Longview has various social groups that are readily available for curious minds. We also host a monthly Wellness Series on topics spanning from mind, body and spirit which is embedded in Longview’s core beliefs in its mission, vision and values. Weekly you can join the Community Cafe where residents come together to join in conversation and coffee. How else can older adults find such opportunities? The answer always comes back to Community.

Longview has always been a proponent in linking residents together for the betterment of their mental and physical wellness. With its strong connection to the Ithaca community and Ithaca College, Longview offers something to its residents that can’t be found elsewhere.

If you are interested in attending one of our monthly wellness programs held on the first Friday of each month you can sign up on our website at www.longviewithaca.org by clicking on the Events tab. You can also call/text Kim at 607-342-4239 or by email at kowen@longviewithaca.org
