December 2024: Year in Review

November 27, 2024

The number 2024 made with a long exposure of sparklers

Time tends to fly when you’re busy, and that’s one thing Longview has been all year round. 2024 may be coming to a close, but it seems like so much has happened! Join us as we share our favorite moments before entering a new year.

 Mini Walk (April)

Longview hosts the annual Mini Walk to End Alzheimer’s on its local campus as a lead up to the Alzheimer’s Association annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We promote awareness of Alzheimer’s while sharing in this extraordinary event and fundraiser with our residents, their families, Longview staff and IC students and faculty. We are grateful for our Ithaca College friends for hosting this event.

 Mac & Cheese Bowl (May)

Longview takes pride in preparing delicious and healthy food for its residents, and we always take the opportunity to participate in one of our favorite community events to show it off. FoodNet Meals on Wheels annual fundraiser is the Mac & Cheese Bowl, and we look forward to the long lines at the Longview table checking out our own special homemade mac and cheese recipe.

 Better Together (May)

We participated in this year’s Better Together event at Stewart Park to recognize making mental health a priority.

 Renovation Project Begins (August)

After almost three years of planning, we finally embarked on our renovation project journey. By the close of 2024 we will have completed (or almost completed) 22 independent living apartment renovations, dining room and auditorium renovations and the flooring, paint and other aesthetic updates on our front lobby, assisted and enhanced assisted living levels. We owe thanks to our project manager, Sara Hayes, of Hayes Strategy for guiding Longview through this very big and exciting process. We also thank Bruce Baker of B+B Flooring who has been doing all of our flooring replacement throughout the entire building, USC Builds the general contractor for Phase One of the renovation project, along with Pleasant Valley Electric, Halco, Granite Works, and KDA Architects. Along with this project came more aesthetic updates to our assisted living level including paint, flooring, new furniture and lots of new oxygen producing plants. Julia Glassman, IC alumni, and creator of Nature to Nursing worked with Longview residents and staff to make nature more accessible to our residents. Check out her website to see the fantastic things she’s doing in communities like Longview.

 Alz Walk (September)

This year, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s was held at Ithaca College. The Ithaca College/Longview Partnership team raised $4,500 for the Alzheimer’s Association of Central NY. Saturday, September 14th was a beautiful, sunny day on the IC campus where we were joined by Longview residents and their family members along with dozens and dozens of IC students and IC faculty. One of Longview’s very own adult day program participants was a key speaker at the event.

 Patio Home Open House (September)

Longview offers 22 patio home units on its campus and it’s not often that one comes available for a new resident. When the opportunity presented itself this past Fall during a turnover to a new resident, we jumped at the chance to get it all bright and shiny so we could show it off at an open house. It was just another sunny afternoon in September when 35 people showed up to check out the patio home neighborhood and the updates that we are making on them.

 National Assisted Living Week (September)

Each year it’s a week-long celebration of Longview’s residents and staff and IC students and faculty who participate in intergenerational and experiential learning at Longview. Some of the highlights this year for Inspiring Generations celebrated Grandparents Day, Tie Dye Day, Decades Day, Hawaiian Day, Patriot Day and ended with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

 25/50 Year Anniversary Celebration (October)

What more can we say than it’s been a wonderful quarter century partnering with Ithaca College and half century providing the best in senior living in the Ithaca area. Longview is grateful for the opportunity to provide a unique experiential learning experience to students from most disciplines.

 Annual Fundraising Campaign (November)

Following up the 25/50-year anniversary celebrations we also kicked off our annual fundraising campaign. As a non-profit (501c3) agency Longview relies on generous community support and collaborations from others to provide an environment where residents can thrive.

A never-ending list of things to do and learn.” That is what residents are saying about their Longview community. This is possible through the monetary gifts of our amazing supporters. Whether it’s $25 or $100, donors can select where they want their gift to have the most benefit. Please click on the QR code below or visit: https://tinyurl.com/yc2e8btu

First move-in’s start in the renovated apartments (November)

Our first renovated apartment welcomed its new resident on November 1st.

Annual Giving Tree (December)

Longview closes out each year with its Giving Tree sponsoring organizations serving families in Tompkins County. This year we are sponsoring the families in our HeadStart program at Longview. If you are interested in participating, you can stop by Longview and visit the Giving Tree in our front lobby. It’s as simple as picking an ornament off the tree and purchasing the item listed on the back of the ornament and returning it to Longview by Friday, December 13th. Longview has been able to serve hundreds of families and children through this program over the years and we look forward to giving back again this year.

 Annual Holiday Bazaar (December)

The annual bazaar has been an attraction at Longview for 20+ years. Anyone looking for their favorite local and handmade crafts or specialties doesn’t want to miss this on December 7th. It’s host to a white elephant sale, plant sale, bake sale, live music and 30 vendors just waiting for you including Longview’s very own resident and master potter, Edward Rooney, along with staff member, Jean Russell of Russell’s Alpaca Acres

 Wellness Events (Monthly)

As the Marketing and Sales Director of Longview I make it no secret that one of my favorite and most inspiring activities this year has been promoting all the benefits of living at Longview through our Wellness Series 2024. Through our renovations this year we have been able to utilize our space in better and more efficient and sustainable ways. To “market” our community we began the Wellness Series which started out as a monthly program series for “future residents” of Longview to be welcomed into our home and check out what we do on a daily basis to offer our residents the best experiences in cultivating mind, body and spirit. Longview residents also attend these programs because we believe it’s a way to allow each to get to know one another and share experiences about what it’s like to live at Longview.

The Wellness Series has grown from once monthly programs to entire mini-series on topics such as:  how to write your own obituary; downsizing and decluttering; and several series from the Alzheimer’s Association such as the Empowered Caregiver Series and the Dementia Conversations Series. We already have a full line up of programs for 2025. It’s a delight to see Longview residents connecting with future residents even if they aren’t making the leap to Longview for a little while. It’s all about developing relationships where we believe Community Is Everything.
